The chapel was built in 1932 with the donations of the faithful, with the support of the city and the Ministry of Public Welfare. It was designed by Barnabás Vécsey, a city engineer. The Reformed Church and the Piarist Chapel in Nagykanizsa were also built on the basis of his plans. The altarpiece, depicting Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar, originally decorated the chapel of the city's Ispita (hospital and poorhouse), built in 1769-71. After the demolition of the old hospital, the image was moved to the small chapel in the new hospital in 1884 and from there to its present location
