The Way of the Cross, inaugurated in autumn 2014, is located in the park next to the parish church, behind the statue of St Martin. György Horváth, a local ceramic artist, and several enthusiastic citizens participated in the realisation of the crossroads' stages.
The 14 stations of the Way of the Cross are made of steel and granite. The steel here does not refer to the ore, but as a product of fire, it represents the fire of the Holy Spirit. The granite, a magmatic rock of depth, suggests the depths of God's love. Each column is three metres high.
At the top is a "steel bud" reminiscent of the Sky Mother, a symbol of purity and innocence. The granite heart carved into the bud represents the first beating of Jesus' heart, referring to the immaculate conception, and its red colour is reminiscent of the blood of the lamb. The steel cross that emerges from the granite heart through the bud is, according to the artist, a ladder to climb up the cross-bar to "our final dwelling place". The whole composition is a tangible expression of God's love.
In the granite slabs in the lower third of the columns, the artist has engraved the story of the Passion. Each station is painted in festive black, and the lines of the images are snow-white, as if celebrating us.
The lighting, which lasts from evening to morning, adds a special mystical light to the scene, giving the composition an extra dimension: lamps in the ground, illuminating the columns, draw the shape of a book on the heart, a reference to the Scriptures, while the metal, bent above the granite slabs and ending in a point, projects a crown onto the column, gently signifying the kingdom of Christ.
At the end of the Way of the Cross, a simple three-metre-high figure of Christ, carved in steel, proclaims "I am with you always". It means, even when we approach it, even when we are going somewhere. He is behind us, watching over us, helping us," the artist explained. This Way of the Cross is made of steel, granite and love. Walking the seventy-five metres, we have the opportunity to meet ourselves.
We stood spellbound in the rising wind, in the mystical gloom of the approaching darkness, listening to the artist and admiring the monumentality, the beauty and the modern technical execution of this masterpiece. It was built by the artist himself, with the help of well-meaning people, as is the pavement we are walking along. He cares for it, keeps it clean and even renovates it from time to time.
What humility, commitment and love of God! What a gift to the city! And for György Horváth, the greatest gift of all, according to his testimony, is that the Creator gave him the strength to create and build it. It is a great artistic achievement! An unforgettable, soul-stirring experience, the Everybody's Way of the Cross reveals its full grandeur and beauty, especially in the evening light.
