The Parish Church of the Heart of Jesus stands in the historic centre of Kőszeg, where the Castle Circle and the market square meet the Main Square.
The neo-Gothic church is the second largest church in Vas County after the Szombathely Cathedral. It was built between 1892 and 1894 on the site of the Korona Hotel on the main square, designed by the Viennese architect Ludwig Schöne.
It has remained the largest building in the city for the last 120 years - 57 metres tall with a tower 49 metres long, 17 metres wide and 19 metres high with a nave. It stands on the western side of what was once the Outer Market Square, now the Main Square, on a hilltop leading up to the hill. The neo-Gothic style is enhanced by the stepped terrace in front of the entrance, the tower at the centre of the façade, the pair of frieze towers, the steep turrets and the artistic stained glass windows. Originally the entire roof was covered with glazed tiles from Moravia, but the roof covering, which had a major impact on the façade, was destroyed, except for the tower windows, in the exceptional hailstorm of 1929.
Interesting fact:
The first picture of the building (which has made the world press) was taken in the autumn of 1893, when the great (Kőszeg) military exercise took place, in which Franz Joseph himself, Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, German Emperor Wilhelm II and King Albert of Saxony personally participated. On their arrival in Kőszeg, a decorated procession passed by the then newly (under)construction Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The interior of the three-aisled church is very impressive. The interior is decorated with polychrome ceiling, wall and column paintings. For the interior painting, 10,000 egg yolks were used as binder. The stained glass windows of the church are particularly beautiful.
The Rieger organ from 1893 is particularly valuable. Passers-by can enjoy a tower transcription of Handel's opera Saul. This is in fact a modern version of the old tower music from Kőszeg.
Mugs:
Among its furnishings, several pieces are medieval and baroque, and several pieces from the Church of St. James. The carved wooden altars were made in Vienna and Tyrol. Its organ was made in 1894 in the organ-making workshop of the renowned Rieger brothers.
Several of the fine medieval and baroque works of art were transferred from the Church of St James. Two chalices from the former parish church are particularly valuable: one from 1421 and the other from 1486. The latter, a Gothic silver gilded chalice, is the work of Wolfgang Haiden. Its special feature is the chapel decoration of the button (node) on the stem. The basket of the cup is pierced with lilies and has the figure of St Dorothy embossed on the base.
The gilded silver master's goblet from the second half of the 15th century is very fine, a fine example of the tower-shaped Gothic monstrance. Above the sanctuary, in a central chapel with columns, stands a statue of the suffering Jesus. A crucifix with Jesus crucified can be seen on a gola ending at the top.
The so-called Bezerédj chapel, made by Mária Bezerédjné Bottka in 1708, is kept here.
