Via Sancti Martin

It is a settlement in the Rába region famous for its woodcarvers. The Roman Catholic church of Bogyoszló, dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, was built in 1836. The nave of the church was painted by Gábor Döbrentey in 1941-42. The Szombathely-born artist depicts the Hungarian saints in six monumental scenes. In Döbrentey's interpretation, St. Martin is the first of the Hungarian saints. The cloak offered to the beggar at the gates of Amiens is already on the shoulders of St Stephen in the next picture. The series on the south wall of the nave ends with the episode of St Margaret arriving on the Isle of Rabbits. On the north side, the subjects are St. Imre and St. Moritz meeting, St. Elisabeth with a rose, St. Lazarus drawing water. The old school houses an exhibition on ethnography, school history and woodcarving.
