
Founded in 996 and still in continuous operation, the Benedictine monastery of Pannonhalma is one of Hungary's most outstanding historical monuments, a centre of ecclesiastical and art history. It is located in Győr-Moson-Sopron County, in the Pannonhalma district, in the town of Pannonhalma (formerly Győrszentmárton). It is still inhabited by a community of about forty monks, who conduct liturgy in the spirit of ora et labora, receive the novices, run the boarding high school, and carry out cultural work - library, archives, museum, publishing house, concerts, as well as working on the financial basis of the abbey's activities, including the maintenance of a winery, a brewery, a herb garden and the reception of guests.
