Stop point - St Andrew the Apostle Church

The foundations of the first church of Süttör, dating back to the 12th century, were discovered in 1906 on Jakabsziget, on the outskirts of the village. The area was probably abandoned due to the flooding of the Fertő. The Baroque church was built in 1732 on the site of the present church. It was demolished in 1889 and a new one was built in the same year. The building, designed by Lajos Zatzka of Vienna, was modelled on the Gothic churches of northern Germany. A tall tower rises in the centre of the façade, with a hussars' tower at each corner. The fields above the three gates are decorated with mosaic images (Mary, Jesus, Joseph). The marble plaque next to the Joseph Gate commemorates Mihály Mentes (1891-1960), a priest-poet born in Süttöri. He wrote, for example, the words of the hymn "We kneel for our country". The neo-Gothic interior of the church was completed in 1889. On the main altar there are statues of St. Andrew and the holy kings of the Árpád dynasty. The side altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The organ was made in 1935 in the Rieger factory in Budapest. Among the many illustrious figures depicted on the side walls and ceiling are Pope John Paul II, Joseph of Mindszent and William of Apor (also the 20th century's heroes).
