The new Church of St Martin in Tours

The names Túr and Tours are pronounced the same.

The names Tours and Tours are pronounced the same. Both are old settlements, and both are patronised by St Martin of Tours. Tours, in France, has a population of 140,000 and is a city that is well known for its famous bishop. The other Túr is in Slovakia, in the former Hont county, with a population of around 750. Since the merger of Kistúr and Középtúr, the village has officially been called Veľké Turovce (Veľké Turovce).

Túr is a very old settlement, its church dedicated to St. Martin must have been there in the 1100s. The ancient building was destroyed by the 1938 flood, and only the ruined sanctuary remains. In recent years the local community, led by parish priest János Nagy, has built a new church. The building has not yet been consecrated, but masses are already held there (with the permission of the bishop).
