Via Sancti Martin

One of the most beautiful Central European art treasures depicting Saint Martin is the Cherényi winged altarpiece in the Hungarian National Gallery. The altar was originally an ornament of the church of Čerín near Banská Bystrica, from where it was brought to Budapest in the late 1800s.  The church was built around 1315, roughly on the 1000th anniversary of the birth of Saint Martin. It was built by Pál Kürtösi comes, the bailiff of the village at that time.

Cserény is a small village with about 440 inhabitants. The parish priest Dušan Mesik had a replica of the winged altar made for the anniversary with the help of the National Gallery. The wing altar was completed with the so-called pediment, which at the time was not included in the gallery's collection.
