A Publication about the Portrayals of Saint Martin in Budapest
On July 4th, on the day of his election as bishop, the bilingual guide entitled "Following the Footprints of Saint Martin in Budapest" was launched at the Hungarian National Gallery. Besides the timing, the site of the venue was also of symbolic importance, as the depictions of St. Martin in the collection of the Gallery are among the most prominent works of medieval European art.
The booklet, published by the Hungarian Council of St Martin's European Cultural Route, draws attention to fifteen works at ten Budapest locations, with museums, churches ans chapels, and even a cemetery among them. The text of the booklet was written and compiled by György Feiszt, Tamás Szávai and Anna Tüskés, while the graphic design was by Yellow Design of Szombathely.
Gábor Bellák, art historian and chief curator of the National Gallery and Szabolcs Szontágh, director of the program of religious tourism of the Hungarian Tourism Agency introduced the event. The publication was presented by art historian Anna Tüskés, and Róbert Orbán talked about how Budapest is bound to the European Way of St. Martin.
Afterwards Györgyi Poszler, art historian and curator of the Old Hungarian Collections conducted a presentation showing the treasured paintings of Saint Martin at the National Gallery.
