Point of interest- Lébény - St James the Apostle Church

The Benedictine monks settled in Lébény in the Árpád era. The abbey is already mentioned in a document dated 1199. The church at the highest point of the village was probably built in 1212. Its patron saint is Saint James the Apostle.

The building is 30-33 metres high, with a massive nave and two side aisles, and has Romanesque features. The nave has a ceiling height of 16 metres. On the west side, you can enter through the Romanesque lined colonnaded doorway, where you can admire the rich decoration of the leaves and the two head sculptures, which, according to legend, depict the faces of the abbot and the master builder. Above the doorway is a secco depicting the Adoration of the Three Kings. The south façade is decorated with a more modest lined doorway than the west.

The church has basically preserved its original form, with the nave's dome vault probably dating from the 17th century. The pulpit, altars and stained glass windows were added during the 19th century restoration. On the high altar is a statue of St James, with a miniature copy of the church at its foot. The height of the first step of the main entrance of the church in Lébény is the same as that of the tower of the town hall in Győr.
