Velo Martini - Full route

Velo Martini - Full route

During the 7-day cycling pilgrimage starting from Bratislava, many religious sites, historical and cultural heritage cross our path in beautiful landscapes that are easy to cycle on. It is not easy for us to leave our daily routine to embark on a journey with a different rhythm. On each of the seven days, spiritual guides will help our cycling pilgrimage at the designated locations. In addition, we will also learn a lot of interesting things about the cultural and natural values visible along the way. Our tour starts in Bratislava, in front of St. Martin's Cathedral, then leads through the rich landscapes of Szigetköz, Moson plain, Pannonhalma Hills, Rábaköz and Fertő-Hanság, and then takes the Sopron - Kőszeg route through the Alpokalja to Savaria, i.e. to Szombathely, to the birthplace of St. Martin, the end of the Via Sancti Martini international pilgrimage route.

How to prepare for the trip?

The total length of the route is nearly 360 kms. The sections are on average 40-50 kilometres long, the shortest: 26 kms, the longest 86.5 kms), which can also be completed separately, you can join the route anywhere. If there are many railway stations and stops at the beginning, end and middle of daily sections, it is usually possible on the vehicles. Along the route, there are numerous catering and accommodation facilities.

All detailed information about the route can be found on the Hungarian website of Via Sancti Martini, under the Hiking Routes menu item. The individual sections of the days can be downloaded to a mobile phone in gpx format here, helping to navigate during the day. It shows how we can get from one point to the other. If you would like to explore a particular settlement or landscape in more detail, in addition to the designated stopping points, we also recommend additional attractions in this booklet and on the website, as well.

It is important to prepare our bikes for the tour! Some practical advice:

  • Bag: use a luggage carrier bag, in which you can pack heavier things, thus increasing your comfort.
  • Lighting: make sure to have backup lighting or a flashlight in case it gets dark.
  • Choose comfortable clothing for cycling, and sports clothing. Be sure to take a raincoat with you. You should have a waterproof bag in which you can place your belongings in case of rain.
  • Safety - always have a first aid kit, helmet, and reflective vest with you!
  •  It is important to eat and drink enough during the tour - the use of water bottles and water bottle holders is recommended.
  • Tools – your bike can break down on the road, a mini pump, spare inner tube, tire remover, multitool, and chain squeezer can be useful for quick repairs.
