Stop point - Savaria square

László Koller's work depicts a relatively rarely depicted episode in the legend of Martin.

Bishop Martin gives his clothes to a beggar. This is how the event is recalled in the Legenda Aurea:

"Martin was on his way to church on a feast day when a naked beggar followed him. Martin ordered the archdeacon to clothe the wretch, but he hesitated. Martin went into the sacristy, gave him his own tunic and asked him to leave immediately. When the archdeacon warned him that he must start the mass, he replied, thinking to himself, that he could not leave until the beggar had been clothed. "

Nearby was the former city gate. It was through this city gate that the people of Szombathely in the Middle Ages reached the church of St. Martin and the adjoining city cemetery, which had been in continuous use since Roman times. For a long period, St. Martin's Church was also the parish church of the town.
