Stop point - Ravazd

Ravazd had two churches in the Middle Ages. The church, dedicated to St Villebald, a Benedictine archpriest from the 7th century, was destroyed during the Ottoman occupation. Its place is marked by a cross erected in 1992 on the hill opposite the village.

The other church of the village, named after Saint Martin, and its parish priest were first mentioned in a document in 1366. The churches of the village, which was repopulated after the Turkish destruction, were built and furnished with Baroque furnishings by Benedek Sajghó, Archpriest Benedek in 1722. The church of St. Martin, in the centre of the village, was built between 1802 and 1821. In 1854, the bells of the church were consecrated in honour of the Virgin Mary and St. George. The large painting of the Virgin Mary was painted by Frigyes Kriehuber in 1865. The altarpiece of Saint Martin with the beggar was painted by Joseph Schmidt in 1799. The painting of St Villebald by Joseph Schöfft and the baroque high altar in the form of a coffin may have been moved from the church of St Villebald, which was demolished in 1820. The village seal of 1830 also shows St Martin.

The fountain of King Béla

Passing Ravazdo on the road No. 82 from Győr towards Veszprém, a square Baroque well-house stands on the right, a hundred metres from the road, in the socket of the so-called "Pannonia Spring". A marble plaque on its wall tells the legend of the spring: in 1241, fleeing from the Tartars, Béla IV stopped to rest and drink from its waters. In the vault of the building is a painting by Károly Borbély in 1992 of Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar.

Text on the plaque:

'King Béla IV rested here in 1241.

Fons hic pannosus Bela quondam quarto Hungariae regi

Fis. Sed vetustate prope corruptus

beneVoLa saCrI MontIs pannonIae

proVIDentIa pVrIore sCatVrIt aqVa

"This tattered spring was tasted by Béla IV, the former king of Hungary, and he liked it. But, almost ruined by its antiquity, the waters spring up purer by the benevolent care of the holy mountain of Pannonia."

According to the chronogram, the spring was renewed in 1782.
