The old city tower stood on Main Square, near the Trinity statue. Its location is marked by a mosaic of town signs and inscriptions. Several descriptions and depictions of the Szombathely town tower have survived, so we know that in the 1700s it had a painted image of St. Martin on its helmet, and then in the early 19th century a figure made of tin. The tower burnt down in 1817, its restoration was delayed for about two decades and finally demolished in 1837. The mosaic was made by Tibor T. Takács.
A scale model of the towering mosaic is on display at the St. Martin's Visitor Centre.
