In 316, Martin was born to a Roman soldier in Savaria, Pannonia, in what is now Szombahely. As bishop of Tours and the first great monk-father of the West, he becomes known to the Christian world. He is the first non-martyred saint. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that most churches were dedicated to him after Mary. Martin's person permeates the whole of human life, from charity to preaching the faith, from healing the sick to monasticism, from shepherding to wine tasting.
