For about six centuries, Keszthely also had a church dedicated to Saint Martin.
The first definitive record of the building dates back to 1247. In that year, it was mentioned together with the church of St. Lőrinc, also in Keszthely. The church of St. Martin was the parish church of the town until 1788. At the end of the 18th century, the parochial duties were transferred to the Franciscan church on Fő Square. The building, which had fallen into ruins, was stripped of its sacred signs in 1809 and demolished in 1816, except for the tower. The remaining tower stood until 1880, when it was destroyed along with the old cemetery around the church. The area became part of the Festetics Castle park.
The local patriots of Keszthely decided in 2012 to erect a memorial to the old church. A memorial tree was planted on the site of the building, and the memorial site was soon included in the local heritage register. Details about the history of the church (and what happened until 2014).
In 2016, the anniversary year, the memorial site will be completed with a memorial stone. Several events related to the commemorative year will also take place. For example, on 16 October there will be a festive mass and a procession to the church site. This programme will also include the "participation" of the oracle of Saint Martin from Szombathely, the birthplace of the saint. And on 28 October, the Balaton Theatre will host a conference on the theme: the destroyed churches of St. Martin in Hungary.
