2018 will mark the 1500th anniversary of the death of Saint Leonian, born in Savaria. Along with Martin and Quirinus, he is the third saint whose name is linked to Savaria / Szombathely.
We don't know exactly when he was born, only that he was still young when the "barbarians" took him from Savaria to Gaul. The 'barbarians' who kidnapped him may have been the Eastern Goths, or perhaps some other group of people who came to Pannonia around 470-480. Gaul's activity is linked to two cities, Autun and Vienne. His name became known in that area as Leoninanus of Vienne (Leonien de Vienne). After regaining his freedom, he became a monk, built churches and founded monasteries. Together with his companions, St. Mamertus and St. Avitus, he was one of those who definitively converted Burgundy to Christianity. Several writings attributed to him have survived. He probably died in 518.
His funerary sarcophagus can be seen in the museum of Vienne. The inscription gives a brief account of the saint's life, mentioning that he came from Savaria in Pannonia.
