Via Sancti Martin

"Martin the disciple dresses me" - by Tamás Somogyi One of the two bronze reliefs depicts Martin sharing his cloak, the other depicts the dream of Saint Martin. The first calvary on the high ground on the western edge of the town was probably built in the early 18th century.  The Baroque building was rebuilt in 1901 and extended in 1906 with the addition of a convent of Carmelite nuns. The complex was extended in 1992 with the Catholic Institute for Continuing Education (now known as the Martineum Academy for Adult Education). The nearby area, now largely built up, was for centuries the vineyard of the town. A theme park in the Martineum courtyard presents Roman traditions and Roman monuments found in the area. Until 1908 there was a hermitage nearby. The old hermitage is a reminder of St Leonian of Savaria, who founded monasteries in Gaul near Autun and Vienne in the 6th century. The pilgrimage route on foot reaches the town centre at the Calvary.
